Project week "DNA-Barcoding" for students during the autumn vacations

The Max Delbrück Center together with the Life Science Learning Laboratory (Gläsernes Labor) invites you to a project week on DNA barcoding during the upcoming autumn vacations. The course will be offered by MDC scientists in English for students from grade 11.

What is DNA barcoding?

DNA barcoding is a scientific method for the precise identification of species. With the help of specific DNA sequences, the so-called "barcodes", organisms are analyzed and assigned to specific species using databases. In this project week, students will apply current molecular biology methods to solve ecological questions. They will discover the fascinating biodiversity and relationships of lichens, which they collect themselves on the Buch campus, in the laboratory.

  • Identification and collection of lichens on the Campus Buch
  • Practical DNA extraction and laboratory methods for DNA analysis
  • Insight into Sanger sequencing
  • Introduction to phylogenetic analysis
  • Discovery of bioinformatics and DNA databases
