Spark: creative processes in the arts and sciences
Spark: creative processes in the arts and sciences is a new concert and discussion series which aims to foster a creative exchange between music and science. Befitting the motto of the Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology (MDC-BIMSB), “Breaking Boundaries”, the series invites world-class musicians, composers and scientists to share their insights and experiences in lighting the creative fire in their respective fields.
Each event in the series presents a concert –– often featuring world-premieres of new works –– and an interactive panel discussion on questions such as: what can scientists and artists learn from each other? How we can tackle current political and societal challenges creatively?

Sebastian Breuninger became a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 21. He joined the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin three years later as First Concertmaster. At the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg in 1999, he won the prize of the Mozarteum Foundation. Since 2001, he has been the First Concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, with whom he also regularly performs as a soloist.

Born in South Korea, the pianist SooJin Anjou grew up in the United States and graduated from the Juilliard School in New York, becoming the first and only graduate in Juilliard's history to be honored with all of its graduation awards simultaneously. She received further formative impulses through private studies in Budapest with the legendary pedagogue Ferenc Rados. As a soloist, SooJin Anjou performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the age of 16. She has won prizes at prestigious international competitions, such as the Robert Schumann Competition (Zwickau) and the Concours International de Piano d'Orléans (France). Her interdisciplinary projects with dancers, video artists, and actors have been seen at the Bregenz Festival, Hamburger Bahnhof, and Opéra Comique (Paris). In 2019, her acclaimed premiere recording of the complete piano works of Morton Subotnick, a pioneer of electronic music, was released.
Wolfgang Köhler was born in 1960 in Hofgeismar. The internationally renowned jazz pianist and composer has collaborated with such musicians and orchestras as Till Brönner, Herb Geller, Benny Bailey, Lou Blackburn, John Marshall, Judy Niemack, Jiggs Whigham, Ack van Rooyen, the RIAS Big Band, the NDR Big Band, and the Berlin Philharmonic. His compositions have been published by Schott Verlag. Since 1999, he has headed the jazz piano department at the prestigious Jazz Institute Berlin.
